How to Care for a Suede Jacket
Suede jacket care is simpler than its reputation. Suede does need more attention than smooth leather, but the routine is easy, and a suede jacket that is looked after can last for many winters. Here is what to do, and what to avoid.
What you need
- A suede brush (soft brass or rubber bristles)
- A suede eraser, or a clean pencil eraser for small marks
- A suede protector spray
- A wide, padded hanger and a breathable cotton garment bag
Before you wear it the first time
Spray the jacket with a suede protector from about 20 cm away, in a light, even coat. Test it first on a hidden spot, such as inside a pocket flap. Let it dry fully for a few hours. Repeat once or twice a season.
Suede jacket care: regular brushing
After every few wears, brush the suede gently in one direction to lift dust and keep the nap even. Then brush lightly against the nap to refresh it. This takes two minutes and prevents most dirt from settling in.
Removing marks and stains
- Dry marks and scuffs: rub gently with a suede eraser, then brush.
- Oil or grease: sprinkle cornflour or talcum powder on the spot, leave it overnight to absorb the oil, then brush it away.
- Mud: let it dry completely, then brush it off. Rubbing wet mud pushes it deeper.
- Large or old stains: take the jacket to a specialist leather cleaner. Do not use household detergents.
If your jacket gets wet
A few drops will dry without leaving marks. If the jacket gets soaked, blot off the water with a clean towel, without rubbing. Stuff the sleeves and body loosely with paper to keep the shape, and hang it on a wide hanger to dry at room temperature. Never use a heater, hairdryer or direct sun, which stiffen and crack leather. Once dry, brush the nap to bring back its texture.
Caring for smooth leather sleeves
Our bombers have smooth leather sleeves. Wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth when needed, and apply a small amount of leather conditioner once or twice a season to keep them supple. Keep conditioner off the suede body.
Storing your jacket
- Hang it on a wide, padded hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.
- Use a breathable cotton bag, not plastic, which traps moisture and can cause mould.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades suede.
- At the end of winter, brush it, let it air for a day and store it in a cool, dry cupboard until November.
What to avoid
- Washing it in a machine or by hand
- Ironing or steaming
- Spraying perfume directly onto the suede
- Folding it into a drawer for months
