How to Check if a Leather Jacket Is Real: 7 Simple Tests

G7 Leather Guides · By the G7 Leather family

Knowing how to check a real leather jacket saves you from paying leather prices for plastic. Walk through any market in Lahore or Karachi in December and you will see racks of “leather” jackets at every price. Some are genuine leather. Many are PU (polyurethane), a plastic coating on a fabric base that is made to look like leather. Shopkeepers often call both “asli leather”, so you need a way to check for yourself.

Our family has worked in tanneries for decades, handling raw hides and finished leather every day. These are the same checks we use. None of them needs special tools, and most take a few seconds.

1. Read the label

A label that says “genuine leather”, “100% leather”, “cow leather” or “sheep leather” is a claim the seller is making. Words like “PU”, “faux leather”, “vegan leather”, “leatherette”, “synthetic” or “man-made materials” mean it is not leather. Be careful with “bonded leather”: it is leftover leather fibres glued onto a backing, and it peels within a year or two. No label at all is not proof either way, but it is a reason to check more closely.

2. Smell it

Real leather has a rich, slightly earthy smell that comes from the hide and the tanning process. PU smells of plastic or chemicals, sometimes sharply. Put your nose close to the inside of the collar or a sleeve, where perfume or the smell of the shop is less likely to cover it.

3. Look at the grain

Leather is skin, so its surface has pores, small creases and slight variations in texture. They are irregular, and no two areas look exactly alike. PU is printed with a grain pattern, and that pattern repeats. Look closely at a large panel such as the back: if the texture is perfectly even, like a print, be suspicious.

For suede, brush your finger across the surface. Real suede has a nap that changes shade as you move it, and the fibres feel slightly uneven. Synthetic suede usually looks flatter and more uniform.

4. Check the edges

Find a raw edge, for example inside a pocket or along a seam allowance. Genuine leather has a fibrous, slightly rough edge, because it is made of tightly packed natural fibres all the way through. PU shows layers: a thin plastic top coat on a woven or knitted fabric backing. If you see fabric threads under the surface, it is not leather.

5. Press and fold it

Press your thumb into the leather and hold it for a second. Real leather wrinkles around your finger, then slowly relaxes, and it feels warm to the touch. PU tends to stay smooth, spring back at once and feel cool. Fold a small area: leather bends with soft, natural creases, while PU often forms sharp, shiny folds.

6. Try a drop of water

Put one small drop of water on a hidden spot, such as the inside of a cuff. Untreated or lightly finished leather absorbs it slowly and darkens a little. PU does not absorb water at all; the drop sits on top. Some genuine leathers have a protective finish that also resists water, so use this test together with the others. Do not try the “lighter test” you may see online: a flame damages a jacket whether it is leather or not.

7. Check the price

A genuine leather jacket uses several square feet of hide, plus cutting, stitching, lining and hardware. That cost has a floor. If a “pure leather” jacket is selling for a few thousand rupees, it is almost certainly PU or bonded leather. Our guide to leather jacket prices in Pakistan explains what goes into the price.

Real leather vs PU at a glance

Test Genuine leather PU / faux leather
Smell Earthy, natural Plastic or chemical
Grain Irregular pores and creases Even, repeating pattern
Edges Fibrous all the way through Plastic layer on fabric
Press test Wrinkles, feels warm Springs back, feels cool
Water drop Slowly absorbs (if unfinished) Beads on top
Ageing Softens and gains character Cracks and peels

Why it matters

PU looks fine in the shop. The difference shows after one or two winters, when the surface cracks at the elbows and peels at the collar. Genuine leather moves the other way: it softens, moulds to your shape and looks better with wear. A real leather jacket that is looked after can last many years, which makes it cheaper over time than replacing a PU jacket every season.
