How to Choose the Right Leather Jacket Size
Getting your leather jacket size right matters more than with most clothes. A jacket that fits well looks sharper, feels better and lasts longer, because it is not straining at the seams. A jacket that is too big looks borrowed. Here is what to measure and how leather behaves.
How a leather jacket should fit
- Shoulders: the shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder, not hang past it or pull inward.
- Chest: you should be able to zip it up comfortably over a T-shirt or thin sweater, with no pulling across the zip.
- Sleeves: with your arms by your sides, the cuffs should reach your wrist bone. When you reach forward, they should not ride far up your arm.
- Length: most leather jackets end at or just below the belt line. Bombers sit at the waist on their rib-knit hem.
- Movement: cross your arms and lift them. The jacket should feel snug across the back but not restrict you.
Measure your leather jacket size in five minutes
You need a soft tape measure and, ideally, someone to help. Measure your chest around the fullest part, your shoulders across the back from edge to edge, your sleeve from shoulder edge to wrist, and your back length from the base of the collar. Then compare your numbers with our size guide.
Leather stretches less than you think
Leather softens and moulds to you, especially at the elbows and shoulders, but it does not stretch much in length or width. Suede relaxes slightly more than smooth leather. So do not buy a jacket that is tight across the chest hoping it will loosen. A jacket that feels close but comfortable on day one is the right size.
Between two sizes?
Choose the larger one. Shoulders and chest cannot be let out, but a tailor can shorten sleeves. The larger size also leaves room for a sweater in the coldest weeks of December and January.
Slim fit or regular fit
A slim fit follows the body closely and looks sharp over a T-shirt or shirt. A regular fit leaves more room for layers and suits broader builds. If you plan to wear a hoodie underneath, go for a regular fit or size up.
Buying a jacket as a gift
Borrow a jacket or shirt that fits the person well, lay it flat and measure across the chest from armpit to armpit, then double it. Measure the shoulders from seam to seam. Send us those numbers and we will match the size.
Common sizing mistakes
- Buying by your T-shirt size alone. Brands size differently; measurements are more reliable.
- Ignoring the shoulders. They are the one part that cannot be fixed.
- Sizing up too far “for layering”. Two sizes up looks loose and the sleeves cover your hands.
